Help Wanted: Independent Leaders

Independence, according to Webster's Dictionary:
1 : not dependent: as a (1) : not subject to control by others (2) : not affiliated with a larger controlling unit b (1) : not requiring or relying on something else : not contingent (2) : not looking to others for one's opinions or for guidance in conduct (3) : not bound by or committed to a political party c (1) : not requiring or relying on others (as for care or livelihood)

Hoboken needs independent and experienced leaders more than ever if we want to break free of the politics of the past. Our City is being held hostage by the equivalent of the "Hatfields and McCoys".

I hope you will join me as I begin the process of installing more responsible, independent leadership in City Hall.

Save a Spot for Scott!

Hoboken is our hometown. We need to take ownership (whether you own or rent - we are all in it together!). The finger pointing and the politics are over, an independent with a plan and vision to make our town a better place to live, to work and to play is on the way.

The time is right to "Save a Spot for Scott!".

Independence still costs. Help Scott remain independent and "no strings attached" by making your contribution.

NJ sets limits - see the attached for more info. Can you give the max???

What can he do by himself?

He'll quickly fall in line with Ramos and Roberts.

How much does he earn from his fundraising corporation himself?

I appreciate everyone's comments.

Regarding my not-for-profit activities... they are, and will continue to be exactly that- NOT-FOR-PROFIT. I don't get paid a dime, and won't.

This is the first "politcal" activity I have been involved in. Politics and "profit" do not mix as far as I am concerned. I am running to make sure they don't mix for anyone else either so our government is more responsive and responsible.

This is a refreshing attitude but for many it's probably a case of "I'll believe it when I see it."
But looking at Scott's charitable background, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and truly hope that he does not represent business as usual.

I'm all for independence, but I'm not clear on Scott's political affiliations. Is Scott a Democrat, Republican, Green, independent?

Nationally, I am a fiscally conservative Democrat. Locally, I like to think of myself as just a person who get the job done... effectively and under-budget.

Why are you so silent?

100's of angry taxpayers are speaking out at Council meetings Mr Delea, yet, you haven't said "BOO!"

Why?

What can you do as a lone voice.

Being a Manager of a small company is nice, but it's no reason to think you can run a bankrupt city.

Personalities won't solve the budget crisis.

REAL solutions will.

I'm sorry, but I'm a 24 year homeowner with kids, and I'm voting the Marsh slate.

Including my fellow LOYAL Ski club member Brian Urbano, who has regularly attended meetings. Unlike yourself who showed up just to obtain petitions.

On another note, It is said that you are using Dave Roberts & Stevens Public Relations people. Is that true?

Please answer.

Maybe you can change some minds?

One of the most important qualities of being a good leader is being a good listener.

Words alone do not bring about positive change. Positive action leads to positive results.

The best part of city council meetings is when the public has a chance to comment and share their views. I try to listen intently. I am so thankful of the Hoboken residents who invest their time in researching an issue and attending meetings to voice their opinion and share information. I learn a lot from those residents and am very thankful to them.

I wish more of the current city council members did the same. I wish more of my opponents even showed up at a city council meeting! Most of them are either old hands at Hoboken politics and part of the problem, or so new to Hoboken that it will be difficult for them to really represent our City. But, I welcome and am interested in what all of them have to say.

My campaign is about "Positive Leadership for Hoboken". It means truly listening, knowing the facts, and doing the right thing for our residents.

Once elected by the citizens of Hoboken, they can expect me to represent their needs and views. They will not have to listen to me speak at city council meetings just to hear myself talk.

As Teddy Roosevelt once said: "Walk softly and carry a big stick".

To the 24 year resident with children:

Actions do speak louder than words. Showing up and "boo Hooing"
at meetings does not necessarily translate to positive change nor does it necessarily reflect passion and commitment.

Are you Bob from Hoboken?

Actually, the ONLY elections Marsh or Soares have ever won were the elections in which THEY used "Roberts and Stevens PR people". (Don't they mention that to new arrivals on the scene? Guess that PR help was acceptable, when they used it.) Scott's PR person is working only for Scott this election, and it certainly isn't for the pay.

If I were a new resident without too much knowledge of Hoboken's recent history I'd seek input from more than one source to inform my opinions, just as I would seek many sources of opinion for any situation with which I was unfamiliar. It just makes sense. Speaking of which: Where is the Tony Soares or Carol Marsh blog, where they answer critical posts from opponents and then allow them to remain online for the public to see? Blogger accounts are free, and it certainly would be in the spirit of open government and public service to do so. That would be an easy way to draw opinions from all sources, a place where new voters could get some idea what the wider public is thinking. Some people, after all, have lived here longer than a 24-year-old has been alive and will have seen and known things they could not. Until such a blog happens, I respect the courage of Scott Delea in being the only candidate to do this.

I appreciate the 24-year-old homeowner's loyalty to his/her fellow Ski Club member Brian Urbano. You seem set in your opinion, so by all means vote for him and the best of luck to both of you.

Thank you for pointing out the discussion area on Marsh and Soares' site, which we were unaware of. Obviously the previous poster is much closer to their situation than we are. Those who regularly read blogs will realize that it is different from a blog such as this one in several aspects, but certainly it is an area where interaction can take place (which may be all that matters to many readers). We certainly encourage vistors here to explore it. Everyone running for public office should maintain a blog or chat room of some sort, and should strive to make it as open as possible - even to comments from 'rival camps'.

That, of course, is always easier said than done, as there is always a strong temptation to simply delete posts that detract or deviate from the candidate's mantra. When that kind of heavy editorial hand is employed, there is no true open discussion at all, and the comments area becomes nothing more than additional campaign literature. We can learn much about a candidate by how (s)he handles comments from all sources, not just favorable ones.

We also found a Marsh blog that the poster who advised us to 'get with it' didn't mention. This one IS an actual blog, or at least follows the blog format. It has two posts at this time, the first being April 8th.
